Teaching sustainability within the context of everyday life: Steps toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals through the EUSTEPs Module

In a world characterized by Ecological Overshoot, where humanity demands more from natural ecosystems than they can sustainably renew, education nurture sustainability-minded citizens and future leaders to help accelerate the transition toward an era our finite planet’s resources stand at core of all decision-making. Despite essential role Higher Education Institutions (HEI) in contributing sustainable society, holistic understanding how incorporate sustainability initiatives into HEI is still lacking. Given critical societies considering number students, educators, staff host every day, ensuring that both taught practiced on campuses becomes fundamental. To this end, strategic partnership was created 2019 set up ERASMUS + project EUSTEPs— Enhancing Universities’ Sustainability Teaching Practices through Footprint . Among main outputs teaching module for introducing concept students. This Module takes 360-degree approach designed students grasp extraordinary complexity engaging captivating manner. paperthus aims to: (1) present EUSTEPs Module, its pedagogical structure, learning outcomes competencies are expected gain, (2) review first pilot four European HEI, (3) shed light contributes development competences approaches achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our findings show 90% were “satisfied” or “very satisfied” with rating as most useful tool among those included Module. addition, appreciated interactive nature proposed teaching. Feedback obtained during contributed shaping Module’s final structure content. The Module—an important tool—is now ready use different disciplines, thus progress UN 2030 Agenda, particularly SDG 4, 11, 12, 13.
